Debating the Elian Action

The government today defended its decision to take Elian Gonzalez by force, saying it was the “only alternative remaining.” Meanwhile, a negotiator working with the Justice Department said a “peaceful solution was at hand” when federal agents moved in. “We could have arranged a peaceful solution. We were not very far away,” said Miami attorney Aaron Podhurst, who said he is a longtime friend of Attorney General Janet Reno and was on hold in a telephone conversation with her when the U.S. marshals entered the Miami home.
