U.S. agents break up Vieques protest; Reno praises operation

Thursday May 04 by Claudia bournecnn
A yearlong standoff between the U.S. Navy and about 300 nonviolent protesters appears to be over, for now, at a U.S. military bombing range on the island of Vieques, near Puerto Rico. After warning the demonstrators occupying the bombing range early Thursday, about 50 U.S. agents confronted protesters at their main camp near the range's front gates. "So far the operation has gone very smoothly," U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno said just hours after the evictions. Reno spoke to reporters at her weekly news conference in Washington.
