Last Israeli troops leave Lebanon

The last Israeli troops left southern Lebanon on Wednesday, ending 22 years of occupation and remaking the strategic map of the Middle East. As departing troops blew up their outposts, Shiite Muslim guerrillas rushed in to take their place as the key power in the area. Caught in the middle, Lebanese militiamen allied to Israel surrendered or fled with their families to the border, leaving tanks and weapons behind.
